Accidents in the Houston Area
As in previous years Harris County in Houston leads all counties in Texas with a total of 418 fatalities. For those who were injured in car accidents in Texas, 1 out or every 5 occurred in Harris County.
Houston Young Drivers Continue to be the Most at Risk
Drivers aged 18 to 34 had the highest number of fatalities in 2014. Male drivers were over 3 times more likely to loose their life when compared to female drivers.
These statistics continue to highlight the need to ensure that young drivers operate their vehicles in a safe manner. Distracted driving, texting, speeding and aggressive driving are leading causes of these fatalities.
Many of these accidents could have been prevented if the driver made safety their primary concern.
Texas Peace Officers will complete crash report when they are responding to and investigating a car accident. These forms, known as a CR-3 include sections for the officers to note numeric codes that represent the contributing factors in the accident.
Based on these crash reports 19 people died and 1,888 suffered serious injury because drivers were distracted.
Clearly, activities such as texting, talking on a smartphone or anything else that can distract a driver will cause accidents, these types of accidents are entirely preventable.
When Do Accidents Occur?
Historically October has been one of the months when most accidents occur. Statistics show that the majority of accidents occur on Fridays and continue over the weekend.
As was the case in previous years, more fatalities result from car accidents on Saturday and Sunday morning between the hours of 1:00 and 3:00 am. Undoubtedly many of these accidents are a result of drunk drivers.
